「工藝時尚-yii」專案最早的出發點，是讓工藝回歸生活，且讓設計回歸工藝製作的本質，藉由工藝和設計產業的連結，及此二領域之專業人士的共同創作，達成跨領域合作之綜 效。這個始於2007年，由國立台灣工藝研究所和台灣創意設計中心共同推動的開發專案，在第2年的運作亦已產生更多豐碩成果，並於9月初在法國巴黎舉辦的Maison & Objet家飾用品展中大放光芒，獲得多方熱烈洽詢；因此，合作雙方決定將工藝時尚賦予「yii」的品牌名稱，進一步推動產品及品牌的後續商業發展。
Yii的中文與「易」、「意」及「藝」字同音，代表著改變、異動，亦具有創意、工藝、及藝術之意涵。這個命名不僅代表yii以當代設計轉化傳統工藝的中心思想，並傳達以精湛技法對產品製作品質的追求。由於以人文及自然之間的合諧關係為出發點，yii大多數產品皆採取手工製作，並於製造流程中摒除造成環境負擔的因子，以示尊重環境與大自然的決心。

「工藝時尚-yii」計畫在國立台灣工藝研究所和台灣創意設計中心的共同執行之下，第一年作品橫跨了國內木雕、細銀、陶瓷、染織、竹編及竹器等六大工藝領域，第二年則增加漆器、玻璃、十字繡等領域，參與人員包含14位曾獲工藝大獎肯定、技法精湛的工藝專家；在設計方面，則號召15位屢獲國際設計大獎、富含原創設計能量的中生代設計菁英，經過數次媒合後建立1對1伙伴關係，在專案創意總監石大宇先生豐富的設計精品操作經驗下，進行密集的設計觀念和工藝技術探討，開發出設計和工藝品質兼具的30多組原創作品。

基於以上的背景，「工藝時尚-yii」的設計取向，平行而不追隨一般所認知的全球趨勢，初步呈現「台灣設計」的自主發展路徑。這一方面是由於本案設計師們從零開始、自發性關懷本土生活的設計思考，另一方面則奠基於台灣特有的工藝取向和生活形態；所產生的結果，則打破過去慣有的思維模式，催生出這批真正從探索本質及根源而來的台灣原創設計，及台灣美學生活作品。

In Chinese philosophy, yii, meaning change and transformation, is believed to be the underlying
law of Nature.

Inspired by this understanding, an ambitious design project, yii, was conceived by NTCRI
(National Taiwan Craft Research Institute) and TDC (Taiwan Design Center). It aims to
transform traditional craft in the contemporary context through design, in order to bring
extraordinary objects to our immensely impersonal environment.

In the first yii collection, the intuitive wisdom of ancient culture is morphed into the design and production of exceptional objects. Focus is placed on skillful craftsmanship and manufacturing processes that are deeply rooted in a harmonious relation between Man and Nature, to finally propose a way of life that is artistic, intelligent and moral.

Nella filosofia cinese lo yii – mutamento e trasformazione – è considerato essere la legge
di natura fondamentale.

Ispirato da questa idea, dalla collaborazione tra il NTCRI (Istituto nazionale di ricerca per l'artigianato taiwanese) e il TDC (Taiwan Design Center) è nato un ambizioso progetto di design: yii. L’obiettivo è inserire l’arte tradizionale in un contesto contemporaneo usando il design, per portare oggetti fuori dal comune nel nostro mondo tanto convenzionale.

Nella prima collezione yii, la saggezza intuitiva della cultura antica si è trasformata nel design e nella produzione di oggetti unici. Ci si è concentrati su produzione artigianale e lavorazione, due aspetti profondamente radicati in una relazione armoniosa tra uomo e natura, per poter finalmente proporre un modo di vita artistico, intelligente e morale.
